Our goals are to:

  1. Reduce stigma associated with behavioral health crisis and suicide and

  2. Educate the community as a whole about suicide warning signs, prevention skills, and resources available.

HFCC and its partners have chosen to use BHT County Equity Project Funding resources toward achieving these goals by offering free QPR training to Ferry County residents and those providing services in Ferry County to residents.

Why Get Trained in Suicide Prevention?

Suicide in Ferry County has increased over time so we are attempting to "turn-the-curve" downward by increasing the number of people who are trained in “gatekeeper training,” so our county will increase the likelihood that people at-risk for suicide will be identified earlier in the progression of suicidal thoughts and behavior, and that the possibility of a catastrophic outcome will be reduced.

We are primarily promoting QPR Gatekeeper Training, which teaches people without professional mental health backgrounds to recognize the signs that someone may be considering suicide, establish a dialogue, and guide the person to seek professional help. In addition, we are also promoting specialized training to increase the chances of reducing suicide rate to zero in Ferry county. About QPR

Following a productive, three-year joint effort between Spokane Mental Health and the founder to launch a national suicide prevention training program, the Institute became an independent organization in July of 1999.

QPR's mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training . We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.

Because suicides happen in families – where emergency interventions are more likely to take place — we believe that at least one person per family unit should be trained in QPR.

Why We Chose This Program

In search for a health issue to address in Ferry County through access to Better Health Together (BHT) equity resources, Suicide Prevention was selected by HFCC. We chose the Suicide Prevention Project because data showed that it is not large compared to more populated counties, the mortality rate is 300% higher per 100,000, at 51.4, than the state average of 17.1, for 2017-19, according to the Washington State Department of Health based on death certificates.

Anticipating that COVID events and post COVID adaptations were likely to increase the disparity, we decided to concentrate beginning addressing the issue by offering prevention training to all Ferry County residents, free of charge, through a well-researched and tested program used worldwide, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). It is easily accessible and self- paced. Through our partnership with QPR, Basic Gatekeeper Training for everyone (think of basic CPR), as well as Specialized Training for Professionals (again think of advanced CPR), are available for no charge.

Also, most courses are listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) and QPR is based locally in Spokane.
